Evergreen School District Budget Update

At their meeting on March 4, the Evergreen School District Board of Trustees was presented with a multi-year budget plan to reduce the District’s expenditures over the next two and a half years.  The District is expected to receive $7 million less in revenue for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years.    The proposal for 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 relies largely on utilizing the flexibility that is being provided to districts from the State to use restricted (or categorical) funds for unrestricted purposes. The District does not anticipate reducing staff in 2009-2010.  The impact of proposed budget reductions for the 2010-2011 school year, however, will be felt much more deeply.  These include closing school libraries, and eliminating such programs as GATE, middle school counseling, and home to school transportation.  Additionally, the District is looking to increase middle school class size; reduce management, custodial, and grounds/maintenance personnel; use Option 2 for kindergarten class size reduction; and close one school.

The Board will meet again on March 12 to further consider these proposals, hear input from the community, and take action.   The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the District’s Board Room at 3188 Quimby Rd.

FTE - Full Time Employee

Kindergarten Option 2 - Option 2 of the Class Size Reduction program allows more than 20 students per class (typically 30 per class) with the addition of an overlap teacher and an instructional aide.

Eliminate Regular Home-School Transportation - Transportation would be eliminated for both home-school routes and school-home routes.  Transportation would be provided for Special Education Students only.
